The tsunami in Japan, severe floods in Brazil, South-Africa, the UK, Germany and Australia, hurricane Aila in Bangladesh and Katrina in the USA indicate that water problems are frequently threatening a lot of countries and becoming more complex. These events are experienced as increasingly uncontrollable and unpredictable, and may cause societal loss and political instability due to the impact on the economy and in particular on food availability and safety.
